  • A native of Laurens, South Carolina, Hal Tollison studied both art and languages at Berea College, Kentucky. At the end of World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy and was sent to southern California. He remained there after his discharge and attended San Diego State University, receiving a master's degree. After graduation, Hal taught art in Lakeside, California, until his retirement in 1986.
During his first year at teaching art in the public school system, Hal found that the easiest way to get his students interested in learning was to introduce them to cartooning. What started as a motivational technique developed into a major part of his art courses. Word of his success in teaching cartooning soon spread, and he became a regular contributor of cartoons for various publications.

Hal took courses from the Famous Artists School of Westport, Connecticut, but says his main teacher was Leo Stoutsenberger, who head up "Cartoonerma," a school for cartoonists in Branford, Connecticut. Hal was awarded the Premio Para Artistas Estranjeros Sobresalientes (Outstanding Foreign Artists Award) for his cartoons in Mexico.
