Harold and the Purple Crayon
Crockett Johnson was born in New York and spent his childhood on Long Island. He acquired his art education at New York University and Cooper Union. For many years the author and illustrator of the popular comic strip Barnaby, Mr. Johnson also illustrated many wonderful children's books, including Ruth Krauss's The Carrot Seed. He is perhaps best remembered for his own slyly engaging books about a small boy named Harold and his journeys with a purple crayon.
